After realizing that most Americans spend huge amounts of their income on "convenience" foods that aren't or on plastic ingredients with no nutritional value, I set out to see how little money I could spend and feed myself (and others)on good quality foods. I have fed a household of 5 adults (and four of those members were men with hearty appetites) on 25 dollars a week or less, and so can anyone else with a bit of imagination and determination.
My main concerns in food consumption:
1. cost
2. nutritional value
3. preparation and cooking times
4. taste and variety
All four factors must be taken into account. It may not be cost effective for you to bake your own bread if you are severely strapped for time, for example. (This is where a bread machine from a thrift store - never pay more than 10 dollars! - comes in handy, since it can both knead your dough and/or bake it. The automatic kneading aspect is a life-saver!) Always factor in efficiency vs. cost vs. nutrition to find the equation that works best for you and your family. If you can't live without meat, for example, try using cheaper cuts in creative ways - or stretch your meat sources with other plant based ones.
